Description: How do you become a "First-Call Congregation?" What does it take? Who gets involved? What are the benefits? What have other congregations done? All of these questions and more are answered in this informative resource on what it takes to become a first call congregation. This resource is especially relevant for congregations that are in pastoral transitions and might consider calling a new seminary graduate. It features some of the exemplary first call congregations that were recently studied to see what can be learned from congregations doing a good job with first call pastors. Through a grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc.,, the study produced useful information about congregational practices and perspectives that lead to healthy and life-giving first calls. Lay leaders from several of the 14 congregations studied, as well as two of the first call pastors, speak honestly and articulately about their experiences in first call congregations. These congregational leaders' comments are organized around key themes that emerged across the case studies: nurturing, connecting, flexibility, partner relationships, and spirituality practices. Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson provides encouraging remarks to introduced this resource. The DVD and accompanying discussion guide is with it.
