Description: Kerygma Program: Gateway to the Bible. "In this course we will provide an extended example of an essential principle of biblical interpretation: using the testimony of the whole Bible in order to learn what God intends to say to us, rather than focusing on single texts. Sometimes this is called letting Scripture interpret Scripture. It differs from the old proof texting approach, which assumed that each text in the Bible somehow contains the 'whole truth.' That always involves selecting the texts that support what one wants to believe. Unfortunately, the result is then likely to be the mistaken conclusion that the Bible seems to contradict itself, for one proof text can often be countered by another. God's revelation is to be found in the message of scripture as a whole, rather than in isolated texts....We shall not be content, then, with the message of Exodus alone, but will use it as our starting point for tracing the message to us of the whole Bible." from the Introduction.
