|Description:||Every gift from God reveals his love, but no gift reveals his love more than the gifts of the cross. These gfts came not wrapped in paper but in passion. They were not placed around a tree but around a cross. They were not covered with ribbons but sprinkled with the blood that Christ shed on our behalf.
In this five-session video Bible study, Lucado explores the many gifts that Christ provided to us at his crucifixion. These include not only the gift of the cross but also the gift of the thorns that pierced his brow. The nails that tore his flesh. The seamless robe that he removed for us. The empty tomb where he forever defeated sin and death.
The five lessons are
1) He Chose To Be One Of Us: Easter is an extension of Christmas. Lent is not just a time of giving up but also a time of receiving gifts; gifts from God. The fruit of sin is thorns so the first symbol Lucado speaks about is the crown of thorns placed on Jesus' head before the crucifixion.
2) He Chose To Forgive Us: The second gift given to us at Lent is the gift of nails. Nails are used to fix things that are broken and also to help bind and hold things together. God took the list of our sins and nailed them to the cross.
3)He Chose To Invite Us Into His Presence - How do we appear to the world? How do we "clothe ourselves" to show who we are to others? Jesus offered His "seamless perfect robe" to all of us and accepted the indignity of nakedness so we could enter into God's presence. There is no more barrier between us and the Holy of Holies.
4) He Chose To Love Us Forever - The fourth gift of Easter is the cross. Every carpenter sees the beauty and potential in the wood he works with. He not only puts it together to form useful objects such as tools or furniture, but knows it intimately, what its strengths and weaknesses are, and knowing these things, he is able to bring out its beauty. Lucado talks about the history and importance of blood sacrifice. God so loved the world he gave his only son for our salvation.
5) He Chose To Give Us Victory - You are an instrument of God: you must choose what song you will play as you live; a song of joy and celebration or a song of bitterness and hopelessness. As Lucado retells the story of the curcifixion and resurrection from the perspective of the disciple John, we are reminded that if we simply wait and watch and hope like John, God will turn the tragedies and griefs of our lives into joy. Death is the great unknown, so we fear. But we need to trust that God works for good in everything for those who love Him.
