Description: This 5 session study explores popular sayings that miss the point. They are simple phrases that sound Christian - like something you might find in the Bible. They capture some element of truth, yet they miss the point in important ways. Join Adam Hamilton in his search for the whole truth by comparing some common Christian sayings with the wisdom found in Scripture. The 5 sessions are:
1) Everything Happens for a Reason - This quote seems to say that God is in control of everything and people need to take no responsibility. Everything is God's plan and God's will; therefore why work for justice. But Hamilton thinks of it in terms of God is sovereign, but God gave humans the rule and dominion over the earth to care for all things. We need to listen to God's nudging to help those who are hurting and suffering.
2) God Helps Those Who Help Themselves - Work and prayer must go together. To love your neighbor means not just to pray for them, but to help them. God helps those who cannot help themselves. We cannot save ourselves, only God and save. And the salvation that God gives demands that we offer grace to others.
3) God Won't Give You More Than You Can Handle - People often say this when people are in grief or suffering. It says that God places grief upon us - he is the author of all grief, pain and suffering. Hamilton sees a more helpful saying that God will walk with us no matter what comes along in life. And the pain and suffering in the world is an opportunity for us to help others carry their burdens.
4) God Said It, I Believe It, That Settles It - Scripture is more complicated than this saying. And this saying tends to end conversation and discussion of Scripture. But discussion and asking questions is important to Scripture; it was the foundation of Jewish theology. If Scripture is hurting us or others we need to wrestle with it.
5) Love The Sinner, Hate The Sin - This is a judgmental statement often connected to the question of homosexuality. This statement requires me to look at another's sin and judge them. Hamilton believes that our mandate is to right our own sins, not to focus on others' sins. It is more helpful to view people as loving creations of God, not sinners.
