Description: "The Faith of a Mockingbird" study, based on Harper Lee's book "
To Kill A Mockingbird" is a four week study that uses Lee's beloved characters to explore our place in the world and God's story as well as what it means to live out a hopeful faith in a broken world. This study is part of the Pop in Culture series that is a collection of studies by pastor and author Matt Rawle that uses works of pop culture-- such as books, movies, or television-- as a way to examine questions and issues of the Christian faith and open our eyes to the spiritual truths that are all around us.
The four lessons are
1) Scout Finch: Telling Your Story - Culture teaches us who we are. This story is about Scout and the brokenness of her world. Jesus came to heal our brokenness. It is in this brokenness that God finds us.
2) Atticus Finch - When Your Story Is Challenged - What makes a hero; someone who uses their gift for a good cause. Atticus had the gift of words. Words have the power to shape the world and people around us: God spoke the world into being. Rawle also tells us the difference between a hero and a saint.
3) Tom Robinson- When Challenge Is Defining -sometimes the assumptions we make are wrong. The Gospels are like a tuning fork. When are assumptions about what is right and wrong are out of "sync;" the gospels can help us get back on the right track.
4) Boo Radley- Defining a Mystery - Solving the mystery of who is Boo Radley is similar to discovering who God is. Rawle speaks about the Resurrection and how often mysteries are revealed to us in darkness.
