Description: Matt Rawle uses works of pop culture-- such as books, movies, or television-- as a way to examine questions and issues of the Christian faith and open our eyes to the spiritual truths that are all around us. "Hollywood Jesus" is a four-week study that explores some of cinema's most famous Jesus movies, as well as movies that have nothing to do with Jesus but teach important truths about our faith, in order to discover what we can learn from the Jesus of Hollywood and how film can be a medium for spreading the gospel message.
The four lessons are
1) From Scripture to Script - How does one tell a good story? How does Hollywood decide to portray Jesus using Scripture? Our lives are about continuing the story that God has started.
2) The Jesus of Now… Whenever Now Is" -Each generation has its own way of describing Jesus. Jesus' story is both ancient and contemporary. Rawle talks about the movies "Rocky," "Ben-Hur", and "Jesus Christ Superstar" plus others. If you made a movie about Jesus, what would it be like?
3) The Gospel According to…" -Disciples had to figure out, how they would live and carry on when Jesus ascended to heaven. How are you a disciple? Movies of transformation and redemption that are discussed are "Lion King" and "Star Wars" "Wall-E" is a story of salvation. In what language do you hear God's message.
4) Everyone's Story - We are to do what Jesus did. It is not enough to know the stories of Jesus- we must live them. We must learn how to break bread with others. "Cool Hand Luke" shows how one can win with nothing. It reminds Rawle of the story of the road to Emmaus
